Looking for an affordable image editor? Pixel is a new piece of software — still in beta — that’s very similar to Photoshop. While not quite as fast and as complete as Adobe’s flagship product, it seems pretty complete. There’s a free demo and the full version is only 32$. Worth a look.

How does it measure up to the free and open GIMP?

I haven’t tried The Gimp, so I couldn’t really say. From what I’ve heard, The Gimp has a hard to use interface. This one is closer to Photoshop’s, which is generally regarded as superior, so I’m guessing it’s better on that front.

Gimp is more “mac” interfaced. The main software doesn’t have a window.
I wouldn’t say photoshop’s interface is superior, but in any case, I’m used to it, so consistency between softwares is always a factor in wide acceptance.
Pixel might be up for the challenge. If I didn’t have an ever evaluation copy of Photoshop CS2, I might be inclined to try Pixel.
